What Did NextLeap Find Out?
NextLeap is a learning platform for emerging talent in tech. They provide online programs (known as fellowships) to help college students and early working professionals accelerate their careers.
In late 2021, they observed that there was a clear need & demand for upskilling for new managers, and decided to solve that problem through a structured offering in the form of a program.
In the early phases of exploration, they focused on one key question:
What are the biggest challenges any new manager faces?
〰️
What are the biggest challenges any new manager faces? 〰️
So they dug deeper.
Tons of conversations, expert interviews, user research calls later - here’s what they learnt:
While topics like giving feedback, nurturing culture, effective delegation, time management etc. were common challenges every manager faced, there were a few problems that specifically stood out for a new manager
-
There is no single recipe or a definition for a perfect manager. Every manager is unique, and their individual style is shaped by a combination of personal traits, experiences, values, and the context and environment in which they operate.
-
There are 1,08,00,00,000+ results on Google on how to be a great manager, but the number of great managers out there is actually far and wide. Generic content with little understanding of their current context was only somewhat useful, and sometimes even counterproductive.
-
These managers were stellar individual contributors who got promoted to lead a team. They had great skills in their core function, but often lacked key skills needed to be a great manager.
