What is it & why should you use it?

There is a ton of incredible research out there that cover various aspects of motivation, and its role in promoting and sustaining learning. As practitioners designing for other practitioners, we felt the need to distil key ingredients to share with you.

At the risk of missing nuance, here are 10 ingredients of motivation LxDs should consider when designing for learning.

  • You can use this to iterate on an existing learning experience or product

  • You can also use this collaboratively in a workshop with your team where different teams look at 2-3 ingredients and come up with ideas

How to use it?

  1. Start with a specific program or product that you want to use the ingredients for. This could be something that exists out there or something new that you are designing.

  2. Pick 3-4 ingredients that might be relevant given your Who, What & How. (Feel free to do this exercise for all if that’s useful as well!)

  3. Go over each of selected ingredients of motivation. For each list down as many ideas as you can. Remember - no idea is bad - do not filter at this point.

  4. Once you’re done listing down ideas for all ingredients, you can vote on ideas with your team and prioritise.

Do check out examples of these ingredients in action in the template below!
